Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
