The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will force the release of case documents related to the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. Trump's team relented after an extended period of trying to block the joint action involving a controversy that has followed the president since his return to the White House.
Expedited Passage in Congress
Senators proceeded by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.
“The American people have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” the top Senate Democrat stated in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Let transparency reign.”
Next Steps
This legislation next heads to the president for his endorsement. Trump indicated on Monday that he would sign the measure.
Even though the president has for an extended period downplayed the uproar over the official management of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the legislation over the weekend, and stated he would sign the measure if it comes to him.
Support and Opposition
The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were present in a public section, applauded after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he worried the measure would make public identifying details of individuals involved, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
